The city of Bari is renowned for its impressive architecture, specifically the Basilica of San Nicola. Dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Nicholas, the ancient church dates back to the 11th century and is a popular spot for taking photos. Don’t forget to appreciate the stunning frescoes and detailed carvings that decorate the walls while you’re there – it’s an opportunity not to be missed!

The city of Bari is well-known for its impressive architecture, particularly the Basilica of San Nicola. This ancient church, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint Nicholas (who inspired Santa Claus), dates back to the 11th century and is a popular spot for taking photos.

While you’re there, be sure to admire the beautiful frescoes (which are essentially wall paintings) and the beautiful carved decorations on the walls.

2. Wander around the old town

To get an authentic view of Bari, visit Bari Vecchia. This charming old town offers narrow alleys to stroll through, delightful squares to explore, and various small shops where you can treat yourself to some goods. You can purchase local crafts and freshly caught seafood from friendly locals, even if you haven’t studied beyond “Ciao” and “Grazie.”

To fully enjoy the experience, I recommend exploring the old town both during the day and at night.

3. Take a stroll along the promenade

While in Bari, you can take a calming stroll along the Adriatic coast and appreciate the stunning scenery of the sea and fishing vessels. Moreover, you’ll find several cafes along the promenade where you can relish Italian coffee or ice cream while immersing yourself in the atmosphere.

The Castello Svevo, also called the Swabian Castle, stands as a well-liked tourist attraction in Bari, known for its medieval-style architecture. It has origins tracing back to the 12th century and houses a museum showcasing the history of both the castle and the city.

If you’re a history nerd, you’ll certainly enjoy your visit to this location.

5. Sample the local cuisine

Make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to bite into the delicious cuisine of Bari! Try out local favourites like orecchiette con le cime di rapa (pasta with turnip tops), burrata cheese, and grilled octopus (my personal favourite).

When it comes to drinks, why not pimp up your meal with a glass of Primitivo, a rich red wine crafted in the region. Or, the timeless option while being in Italy – Aperol Spritz.

6. Take a ride up the Blue Sky Wheel

One of Bari’s must-see attractions is the Blue Sky Wheel. Rising tall against the city’s skyline, this Ferris wheel provides stunning panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the historic centre.

For an added touch of luxury, visitors can pay a bit more for the VIP experience, which comes with a free bottle of prosecco. Soaring high above the city while enjoying prosecco, it’s an unforgettable way to appreciate Bari’s beauty.

7. Relax on the beach

If you’re travelling to Bari in the summer, make sure not to miss the opportunity to visit Pane e Pomodoro beach, which is situated near the city centre. The beach features a lovely sandy shore and crystal-clear water, making it a perfect place for swimming and working on your tan.

Unfortunately, my visit took place during a colder season, so I didn’t have the courage to take a dip.

8. Take a day trip to Alberobello

If you plan to get the best out of your visit to Bari, make sure to include a day trip to Alberobello, a town nearby. Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its unique trulli – houses constructed with dry stone and cone-shaped roofs.

Walk along the charming streets and soak in the town’s historical atmosphere. It’s sure to provide you with an Instagram-friendly backdrop for sure!

9. Shop for souvenirs

If you’re searching for souvenirs like handmade pottery, leather goods, and local olive oil, Bari is where you should go. Visit Mercato Coperto, an indoor market that provides a variety of things, including fresh produce and clothing.

Roaming around the market might help you find the ideal item to take home as a memory or to give to a loved one who couldn’t tag along.

10. Experience the nightlife

Bari proudly offers a lively nightlife, with many bars and clubs staying open until late, and even into the early hours. Whether you enjoy a relaxed vibe with a cool drink at a stylish lounge or a vibrant setting with great music at a lively club, Bari has it all.

Treat yourself to a memorable experience by joining the locals and diving into the city’s exhilarating nightlife scene. Just remember to have a glass of water now and then; your future self will thank you in the morning.

My experience visiting Bari

Italy is a wonderful destination with numerous attractions, and Bari is no different. During my visit, I enjoyed exploring the city, indulging in delicious meals (quite a lot!) and even managed to time my late-April trip with a local farmers’ event that featured wine-tasting, dancing, and fireworks (known as Villaggio Coldiretti).

I was genuinely impressed by the warmth of the locals and their willingness to converse in English, which isn’t always the norm in Italy, from my experience.

If you can find reasonably priced airfare and accommodations that meet your needs, it’s definitely worth considering a visit to this unique and less crowded tourist spot in Italy that holds an unique charm.

How long should you stay in Bari?

Based on my experience and travel needs, you can easily experience Bari over the weekend. If you like to take it easy and fully take in the atmosphere, up to five days could also do the work.

Although Bari is a small city, there are also some nearby areas that are worth visiting. However, please note that these areas may require more time or pre-planning to reach.
